Preparing for a Successful Interview
Interviewing for a position is a two-way street. Both you and your prospective employer are asking each other questions, each evaluating the other's responses to determine a good fit.
You may only have a short time in an interview. Often, the employer will make a decision based on their first impression of you. Here are some ways to make that good first impression:
- Arrive on time. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to allow for unexpected delays.
- Dress neatly. Work clothes are not appropriate for an interview.
- Pay attention to personal grooming and hygiene.
- If you have immigrated to the U.S., bring either proof of citizenship, your resident alien card or your passport with work permit.
- Bring work references with you.
- Allow the client to direct the interview. Wait for the appropriate time to ask your questions.
- Above all, be both positive and realistic about your skills and what you can offer the client.
In the interview, you will want to talk about all aspects of the job before you accept a position. Make sure you understand what the job involves and what is expected of you. The answers can help you make the best decision.
About the family:
- How many people live in the home?
- Who is home during the day?
- If not a nanny position: Are there any children? If so, what are their ages?
- Do you have other domestic help? What are their jobs? What are my obligations to them?
- Am I the first candidate of this kind, or am I replacing somebody?
- Do you have any animals? Will I be responsible for their care and feeding?
About the job:
- What are the expected duties?
- What is the daily schedule?
- Who will manage me?
- Does the job require driving? Is a car available for household use?
- Will I be required to wear a uniform? Are uniforms provided?
- Will I be required to sign a confidentiality agreement or a contract?
- What is the official start date?
About the salary:
- What is the salary? Will the salary be paid weekly, biweekly, etc? What taxes will be withheld?
- How many days/hours am I required to work per week?
- If not part of the regular schedule, does a separate compensation rate apply for overnight or weekend work?
- Will you pay a transportation allowance?
- Will you pay Social Security Tax?
- Will you provide health insurance?
- What is your policy for vacation and holidays? Sick days? Are these days paid?
- Will I have a formal review? When? Will there be a chance for a salary increase at the review?
For live-in positions:
- What are the days off?
- Can I be away on those days? When may I leave? When must I return?
- Describe the living quarters and neighborhood.
- Is there a car available for my personal use?
- How might the schedule change?
- Will evenings or weekends be required?
- Will I be responsible for any utility bills?
- Will meals be provided?
